James Ivers III ("Iron Ass Ivers") was my grandfather and in a way a surrogate father after my parents divorce. I spent much of my life from age 7 through 17 with him, including working at the Lost Packer Mine...

]]>The following quickly combines a number of different but relevant theories that impact small group formation, communication, dynamics, and getting things done, like project management. You've all seen the resources triangle for PM, and you may have heard of Brook's Law (from the Mythical Man Month) (which has more recently garnered empirical evidence supporting the premise), and you may or may not be familiar with Tuckman's theories on small group social dynamics, and my work related to tying that in with role-playing gaming and business development.
Text explanation may be added later when time permits.
]]>It has been a decade since I first created the "cheat sheet" that summarizes many pages of the Avedon "Interaction Patterns" concepts into one page, with specific notes for all forms relevant to role-playing games. I hope you find it as useful a shorthand reference for RPG design as others have. This covers tabletop (TRPG), live-action (LRPG), electronic (ERPG), and various hybrid (HRPG) RPG formats.
This was further propagated as presentation at Seattle Children's hospital.
Much to my surprise this has since been adopted by a number of professionals as well as professors at various universities around the USA in their Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) degree programs as an example for specific a specific modality for applied role-playing gaming across recreational, entertainment, professional development, educational, and healthcare disciplines.
I have found Avedon's "Interaction Patterns" and analysis very useful as an additional short hand tool for explaining and developing role-playing games in each format for various goals. In addition to the various textbooks and professional manuals that reference it in various summaries, I am fortunate enough to have in my vast library an original of the 1974 book, "Therapeutic recreation service: An applied behavioral science approach".
I hope you find it as helpful as a short hand for some interesting concepts.

"I am doing many things. I do not state this lightly. I mean many, many, many things, and thrive when doing so. This is all too often unfortunately on a bare bones, shoestring budget, but fortunately with significant impact far beyond the normal reach of the meager monetary resources I have available. Can you imagine how much more could be accomplished if any of these endeavors ever received any significant funding? Technology can be an impact multiplier, so I have many websites elated to these many endeavors to help improve the reach of these projects. My overall goal: do what I can in my brief existence to help improve the overall human condition." --Hawke Robinson, excerpt (not included in final publication) from an Interview by Michael Tresca, September 20th, 2015

In reference to questions about Hawke Robinson's earlier work in the 1970s and 80s, and later papers in the early 2000s, and how the academic and public has treated treated these, and Hawke, over the decades:
"Regarding my proposals being ignored, ridiculed, or others taking credit as they start to become popular: to paraphrase several sources, for new or challenging ideas, if what I have proposed is in any part eventually found to be true decades later, one must be prepared to be called a madman, or worse, at first. It will likely eventually pass through the typical phases of being ignored, then ridiculed, and finally accepted as being self-evident. Though many may hijack the ideas without giving credit as they become embraced, hopefully over time there will eventually be correct attribution. I only hope that my open philosophical approach, counting on sharing the flame with others, leads to the rising tide of shared knowledge raising all boats, and to the betterment of the overall human condition." --Hawke Robinson September 19th, 2022. Folks said I should put something a little more personal online instead of just all my efforts behind the scenes and in "professional mode". They suggested something more personal should be available for those that want to know more about the person behind all these projects and communities. Until about 2012, I was generally a behind the scenes impact person. With my decades of background in physical and information security, I am generally uncomfortable putting myself and my personal information online to such an extent, but due to demand, here you can learn a little about me, and what I do.

]]>"Hi! I'm Kiki and I just wanted to drop you a little note to let you know how helpful your site has been. I just finished a paper for one of my writing classes on the benefits that RPGs can have on people with social anxieties and other social problems. While I was able to find a few articles through the usual databases like JSTORE and EBSCOHOST, I was really struggling to meet the required amount of sources. Thankfully I found your site and I was easily able to find sources that supported my thesis and that helped me get to that magical "10 sources needed" goal, and even beyond (I ended up with 18 source, several of which I found on your site). What you've compiled helped what had started to look like an incredibly stressful struggle of a project into something that I was easily able to finish. While I still need to fix a few things before turning it in tomorrow night, I went over most of the paper today with my professor, and he was impressed. I know that would not be the case had I not found your site. Thank you so, so much for maintaining such a helpful and interesting site."

“This is so cool! I played tabletop RPGs as a teen and young adult and later helped some teens run a D&D game when I was a teen librarian. I now teach special education to and have been wanting to incorporate gaming into my classroom. This year I got the opportunity to participate in a life skills focused RPG based in second life with my high school transitions students and they love it! The students love the extra independence they gain while playing as compared to their relative lack of independence in real life and it really builds their confidence and social skills. Would love the opportunity to play a tabletop RPG with some of my kids and am so excited to hear a program like this exists.” –Jackson Robinson

SUMMARY
Multidisciplinary background in technologies and healthcare. Fluidly able to alternate between hands-on, team building, mentoring, and C-level positions (CTO, CIO, CDO, CSO, etc.) constantly updating data, information, knowledge, wisdom, methodologies, perspectives, and skills. As much as possible, as appropriate, sharing this experience and information openly to help expand the impact from these efforts to improve the overall human condition through outlets such as the non-profit RPG Research, the Tech Talk with Hawke broadcasts and website, other talk shows and podcasts, as well as many other channels and open source communities. Enabling organizations to swiftly take their vision and adapt requirement needs towards achieving an exceptional track record of success. Additional background as Washington State Department of Health Registered Recreational Therapist with a diverse background in education, neurosciences, neurotech, research, and healthcare (including nursing, rehabilitation, emergency room, in-patient and out-patient long-term care, medical records systems, HIPAA compliance, etc.) expands technical knowledge across many verticals.
A highly flexible technical leader, quality of life advocate, and professional development mentor with 15+ years of leadership and 20+ years hands-on technical engineering experience at all tiers: legacy and cloud infrastructure, data layers, middleware, front-end, advanced networking, hardware, physical and information security, etc. Working at all levels from hands-on through C-level management. Working with a range of companies from brand-new built-from-the-ground-up fast-growth startups, non-profits, small mom-and-pop shops, through SMBs, to global enterprises with 10k+ employees and millions of users, and Fortune 10, 50, 100, 500, and 1000 companies. Building departments and organization up from scratch to over 35 direct reports and over 200 under my overall supervision.
Often brought in to solve the problems that others have been stuck trying to solve, helping companies that are trying to figure out how to improve their efficacy and efficiency in SMBs and Enterprises, or to help thought leaders trying to figure out how to turn their ideas into reality from the ground up.
A great supporter of open source, and try to avoid custom-coding solutions from scratch if there are already great tools available (especially open source options) that can get organizations 60%, 80% or even 90%+ of the way to what the need much more quickly than most custom-coded solutions can, and with whole communities to support many of the tools, reducing the maintenance burden of our core support and development staff, and letting the organizations focus on their “secret sauce” rather than all of the little things that are already addressed by others. If there are no viable off the shelf open source or affordable solutions that are close enough to customize, then I have lead teams to build entire robust, and very importantly scalable, platforms from scratch and through multiple full version iterations (1.x, 2.x, etc.).
Taking more of a leading by example and being a mentor (not tor-mentor) leadership approach, with strong accountability but without being a micromanager.
In addition to an extensive technology and management background, organizations benefit by drawing on many years of background in the neurosciences, cognitive neuropsychology, neurotechnology, recreational therapy, innovative R&D, research psychology, and known as the “Grandfather of Therapeutic Gaming” in healthcare, role-playing game, professional development, education, and therapy industries.

November 2016 – July 2017
Twinlow Camp & Retreat, Rathdrum, Idaho – www.mda.org
Spent half a year designing and preparing a detailed Recreational Therapy program providing music, artwork, tabletop games, and live-action role-playing games for 21+ campers, 21+ “helpers”, 6+ nurses, and 12+ counselors.
Provided adaptive drum circles and drum circle facilitation, participant customization of shields, use of “boffers” (soft foam swords) in combat LARP and tabletop Role-Playing Game (RPG), use of water items in Adventure LARP and tabletop RPG adventures. Created program plan documentation based on the “TR Cookbook” standards.
Muscular Dystrophy (MD) participants were ages 6 to 17, male & female. Functional impairments ranged from 1 through 3 (0 = no impairment, 4 = complete impairment), about half in wheelchairs. Objectives are detailed in the link. Facility is “challenge by choice” and most activities did NOT have 100% participation throughout the week, except our program DID have 100% participation.
Trained 5 other volunteers, including TR methodologies, including APIED, I supervised and trained them between February to July 18th & 20th, to prepare for this event over a 6 month period to aide in implementing these programs for 21 campers with Muscular Dystrophy, plus their individual “helpers” and the dozen camp counselors.
Despite the potentially high risk with this population during the live-action combat LARP, there were zero injuries, no visits to the infirmary or nurses during our programs. Outlined objectives achieved and exceeded everyone’s expectations. Continuing to attend MDA community monthly meetings, city accessibility council meetings, and provide occasional activities to the broader MD community.
