Some of this game was developed by me for a 2006 program I did for Deaf and HoH youth and adults. Over the years I expanded these games for more and more diverse populations and diverse goals.
The original version of the Z-Day City game was to teach Autism Spectrum youth and Adults how to use the public transition systems in Tacoma, Washington. This was later repeated in other cities with public transit.

UPDATE: This program is based on work at Eastern Washington University with oversight by Professor Emily Messina and others. If you implement this, or similar programs, please comment and/or add your posts to the website, so that everyone can benefit from the pooled information.
I just sent to the program head, the latest draft of a recreation therapy-related activity program plan using role-playing gaming to prepare for and utilize the metropolitan Bus system for Autism spectrum participants.
From a recreation therapy perspective, this activity utilizes tabletop and live-action role-playing games to help Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) participants build up confidence and competence toward improved autonomy to use the public transit system.
This adventure activity begins by using tabletop RPG for phase I, and then Live-action role-playing (LARP) (actually using the buses) for the final phase II.
Having met with some of the ASD members and their families, I am hopeful that some day we will be able to schedule an actual implementation.
Below are a few edited excerpts from the 71 page document:
Appendices 11A-11D
1. Client Group: Young adults with a diagnosis on the autism spectrum who are high functioning. How to use appropriate social skills while using the public transit system
2. Client Group: Young adults with a diagnoses on the autism spectrum who are high functioning.
3. Task analysis of: Correctly uses the public transit system and demonstrates appropriate social interactions. Criterion Level: Successfully gets to the previously determined locations at the predetermined times.
4. Target behavior: Effectively using the public transit system. Plan to assess (contrived) The social skills will be assessed each time phase one is implemented (natural). The clients skills will be further assessed during the phase two implementation into the community. (assessment tool) Optionally use the Bus Skills Checklist Assessment.
5. Target behavior: Effectively using the public transit system Teaching strategies: Role-playing will be used as the main strategy in developing the skills.
Activity Overview
A social recreation activity designed for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) participants using tabletop role-playing gaming (RPG) and live-action role-playing (LARP), intended to introduce, familiarize, practice, and then actually utilize the public transit system, especially buses, in their area. The activity initially uses the tabletop RPG format to help the participants gain familiarity with the public transit system in a safe and non-threatening environment. Both stages of this activity emphasize cooperative problem-solving social skills. Additionally, the participants are encouraged to use non-electronic resources to learn the transit system in the greater metropolitan area.
The original version of this project was as part of a classroom team project at Eastern Washington University for the Spring 2014 quarter for the RCLS-445-01 Processes and Techniques in Therapeutic Recreation course under Professor Emily Messina, with team members: Britany Williams, Jaki Hilzinger, and W.A. Hawkes-Robinson.
Adventure Overview and Preparation Advisory
This adventure takes place in the contemporary (as of the writing of this document) 2014 metropolitan area. However, this is a fictionalized version of reality, it is a world where super-heroes and super-villains are real, and a super-secret government espionage and law enforcement agency, in conjunction with both super heroes and regular heroes, attempt to thwart the nefarious plans of evil super-villains and their accomplices. This is modeled roughly on the Marvel Comics S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series and associated Marvel Universe setting that includes Iron Man, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, etc. Though without ever specifically using their names or likenesses (not needed for this adventure) In the interest of avoiding copyright issues, though this adventure is modeled after the concepts, the specific names and details have been changed, and the storyline itself is completely created from scratch rather than creating any derivative works directly from the Marvel Universe.
This adventure will require some hours of preparation by the GF (Game Facilitator) to effectively run, it is not meant to be picked up by just anyone, or taken over by another GF mid-adventure, this is an entire adventure campaign, and so requires the upfront investment of time by the GF necessary for such endeavors. The Players will not need to undertake much preparation if the GF is sufficiently familiar with the campaign, setting, and rules well in advance of the first session. There should also be a fair amount of time spent by the GF getting to know what kind of adaptations may be necessary for the particular population base this adventure will be used with, in the case of this writing, involving young-adult to adult Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) male (and some female) participants, are specifically targeted for this assignment.
The Adventure - “Save The City From Z-Day”
The tabletop stage will initially walk everyone through meeting each other, learning the circumstances of the situation, getting a basic understanding of each Player Characters (PC) strengths/weaknesses/professions/abilities, and an orientation on how to take turns talking, taking actions, etc.
Throughout the adventure, the PCs will have each of their skills tested in specific challenges, often having to rely on multiple PC skills and specialized equipment, learning how to use the skill challenge rules and a six sided die, to cooperatively to overcome challenges, and will encourage effective communication to coordinate their efforts.
It is possible, depending on how aggressively some of the PCs act, that some combat situations (in the context of the game, not the real world) may occur, and the participants will become familiar with the basic mechanics of opposed rolls/combat rules.
These skill challenge and combat rules will not be used in the Live-Action Role-Playing (LARP) stage, they are only for the tabletop RPG stage. There will not be any combat in the LARP stage, but the players may be provided some assistance from the GF (or assistants), based on their characters abilities for skill checks, or adaptive needs if the participants have trouble solving some of the challenges on their own.
While the tabletop RPG rules are included to allow each participant to create their own characters from scratch, for the sake of getting started quickly, the GF should have a number of prepared player character sheets (see appendices) available to hand out to the players. The GF can either allow the participants to each pick their character (preferred), or if this seems it would lead to conflict, use random allocation or other means to automatically assign a character to each participant. The GF should try to have several more PC sheets available than the actual number of participants so that the participants feel they have a greater freedom of choice, for example if there are 5 participants, offer around 8 to 10 pre-generated PC sheets.
Game System Overview
For the tabletop RPG stage, this adventure uses Hawke's Simplified RPG as the de facto tabletop role-playing game system, though any system could be used. The rules for this system are made freely available under the Creative Commons license for download in PDF format from the Ea RPG website, http://www.earpg.com .
For the LARP phase of this adventure (Phase II), it is a non-combat LARP, so does not require complex rules since it is more a social interaction and clue solving / scavenger hunt activity.
Avedon (1974) Interaction pattern
Intragroup – Action of a cooperative nature by two or more persons intent upon reachingAction requires positive verbal and nonverbal interaction (Avedon, 1974, p. 169).
Phase I Goals Summary
Working cooperatively as a group, the participants will become familiar with the concept and use of a tabletop role-playing game in a socially cooperative problem solving group setting.
• Participants will become familiar with the general layout of the metropolitan area and some key locations.
• Participants will become familiar with how to find various bus routes, their times, bus stop locations, and other public transit-related information.
• Participants will become familiar with the fictional situation, how to find more information through clues and questioning non-player characters (NPCs), working cooperatively to solve challenges.
• Optional: Use of BUS Utilization Skills Assessment (BUS), pages 324-330 of Assessment Tools for Recreational Therapy and Related Fields, Third Edition.

November 2016 – July 2017
Twinlow Camp & Retreat, Rathdrum, Idaho – www.mda.org
Spent half a year designing and preparing a detailed Recreational Therapy program providing music, artwork, tabletop games, and live-action role-playing games for 21+ campers, 21+ “helpers”, 6+ nurses, and 12+ counselors.
Provided adaptive drum circles and drum circle facilitation, participant customization of shields, use of “boffers” (soft foam swords) in combat LARP and tabletop Role-Playing Game (RPG), use of water items in Adventure LARP and tabletop RPG adventures. Created program plan documentation based on the “TR Cookbook” standards.
Muscular Dystrophy (MD) participants were ages 6 to 17, male & female. Functional impairments ranged from 1 through 3 (0 = no impairment, 4 = complete impairment), about half in wheelchairs. Objectives are detailed in the link. Facility is “challenge by choice” and most activities did NOT have 100% participation throughout the week, except our program DID have 100% participation.
Trained 5 other volunteers, including TR methodologies, including APIED, I supervised and trained them between February to July 18th & 20th, to prepare for this event over a 6 month period to aide in implementing these programs for 21 campers with Muscular Dystrophy, plus their individual “helpers” and the dozen camp counselors.
Despite the potentially high risk with this population during the live-action combat LARP, there were zero injuries, no visits to the infirmary or nurses during our programs. Outlined objectives achieved and exceeded everyone’s expectations. Continuing to attend MDA community monthly meetings, city accessibility council meetings, and provide occasional activities to the broader MD community.

]]>Question Prompt: "Assuming you are experiencing growth, the question is how to manage it. Do you let it expand freely, including borrowing money to fund the expansion, or do you control the growth with capital available from the generation of profits at current levels."
https://www.alignable.com/groups/ask-smb-owners-anything?pinned_discussion_id=841689
We had to put the brakes on more than once. Back in 2014 before I had employees at RPG LLC, I was overwhelmed with clients, and tried desperately to find people I could hire, but nobody had the skillset for this newly developing sub-industry.
I am very uncomfortable with debt, and our issues aren't really the kind you can spend your way into solving. Only time backed by effective longitudinal planning and effort could solve the issue.
So I had to create a long-term plan to build the workforce for this burgeoning industry from scratch. Along the way I've created much of our direct competition (unavoidable, but a good sign of healthy market demand, and there is plenty of work (and clients) to go around).
I stopped taking on new clients and organizational partnerships (as much as I hated to), and began focusing on growing the training and the non-profit organization that included training the future workforce. This is slowly, but definitely, paying off. Though at the same time it is spinning up a _lot_ of potential competitors long-term (again, not necessarily a bad thing long-term).
The training materials continue to evolve, the online education platform, books, videos, publishing of training workbooks, have all been helping bit by bit.
I was able to hire my first few employees a few years ago, and this year we now have 6 employees with several more in the training queue. We're trying to get to a minimum of 10 ASAP. (The non-profit is nearing the 200 volunteers mark across 6 continents, though activity varies wildly with volunteers of course).
On the non-profit side we were growing 300% year-after-year (albeit from very small micro numbers), we had to put the brakes on there as well, so at the end of 2020 the board put together a 1 year plan to solidify the foundation to handle such overwhelming demand. We shored up our infrastructure, documentation, processes, training, etc.
We're almost ready, getting all the pieces in place, so that we'll be able in January to open back up the floodgates (at least partway) in 2022 at both the for-profit and non-profit organizations.
We're in the middle of finding new and larger facilities here (we need a minimum 2k-4k sq ft warehouse our current 1750 sqft is packed to the ceiling), and we're once again expanding into other states (in addition to our national mobile facilities and our international online programs).
We're still very, very tiny, but we pack a lot of impact into what we do.
I have still have clients that have been waiting for me (some now waiting 7 years!) to get all the pieces in place and to get to 10 employees to meet their needs.
They want what only we can provide, and no one else can come close (they've tried and been sorely disappointed).
I don't know that I'd recommend this approach for most, because most folks are probably not trying to grow an entire industry from scratch, but perhaps some of these experiences might be useful for some entrepreneurs out there considering different options.
Cheers!
-Hawke Robinson
]]>Apologies to everyone waiting for replies from me via email, phone, RPGSN.net, Linkedin, or elsewhere.
I am still in a situation with extremely long hours from work (100-120+ hours per week at LearningMate, plus additional hours for RPG Research, RPG Therapeutics, TheFantasy.Network, etc.).
Also, with the crisis in India exacerbating staffing at LearningMate, it has only gotten worse. I hope in about 3-4 weeks this can be brought back to some more reasonable hours, one way or another.
Until then, I am only able to catch up on non-LM emails during the weekends, and I amrarely able to keep up with any social media, including LinkedIn.
I am about 2-3 weeks behind in my email responses now, and more than a month behind on social media responses. Great things are happening!
But I have zero spare time left until early July.
If it is urgent, and you know my phone number, text me first. I have stopped answering calls from people I don't know due to too many sales people calling.
Text me first, and we can schedule a phone or online call if you aren't trying to sell me something.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.

I have 40+ years of tech, 30+ years R&D, 30+ years music, 20+ years healthcare, 20+ years security, 15+ years management & media, 15+ years Recreation therapy, 10+ years automotive, 10+ years professional photography, and many other diverse experiences in my background.
Involved with tech since 1977. I first began coding in 1979 around 8-9 years old, & was online via ARPANET through the University of Utah!
I am enthusiastic about how technology can help improve the quality of life for people globally, while taking into account the holistic human experience and need for life-balance where it is also important to "unplug".
I have additional diversity with a background in healthcare, music & recreation therapy, research psychology, and the neurosciences.
You can see more details about my unusually diverse and deep background here: https://www.hawkenterprising.com/detailed-it-work-history
and tech skills inventory list here: https://www.hawkenterprising.com/archives/resumes/web/hawkes-robinson-tech-resume-skills-inventory
I have worked and consulted for Fortune 100 & 500 companies.
Not counting the several small companies I built myself over the decades, for others I have built entire IT departments from scratch, including acting directly in all roles necessary for doing the work myself and/or hiring the best people for the job: software, hardware, networking, R&D, VARs, contracts, budgeting, legal, marketing, sales, international distributed teams, facilities design & building, and much more.
I have repeatedly built entire platforms from scratch. Whether using established development platforms, through custom coding from the ground up, or through cobbling together opensource and other technologies. When needed, I only need a few weeks to brush up on my decades of hands-on coding experience and write from scratch or hack what needs to be hacked to make it work.
I prefer clean, well architected, robust, proven methodology-guided approaches, including properly designed, testing-driven, beautiful design patterns, and code, but I can also do quick and dirty prototyping necessary to get things done. Whether classical waterfall project approaches or CI/CD driven Agile related.
I adapt to the best tools for the job to meet the scope of the business, to bring their vision to life.
I have diverse 20+ years hands-on & leadership experience in: technology, proven executive-level management, DevOps, manufacturing, games research & development, software R&D, and healthcare experience.
Repeatedly successful track record for turning companies around from running double-digits in the red, to double-digits in the black within 1 to 3 years.
Excellent skills in business continuity planning & analysis.
Proven record of executive leadership of information technology operations within multiple industries including: IT & InfoSec, Education, Energy, Entertainment, Events, Healthcare & Medical, Media streaming, Non-profits, Publishing, Recreation, SaaS, IaaS, cloud services, virtual office & workplace / telecommuting, & many others. Involved with healthcare since 1990.
Highly adaptable, simultaneously excels at system-level architectural design, program-specific implementation, and hands-on execution.
To be blunt though, letting you know up-front my hands-on coding is getting a bit rusty, so if you want a CTO that is a full-time coder too, rather than the full spectra of diversity across all areas of CTO skills, you may want to consider someone else.
Recommendations from others here: https://www.hawkenterprising.com/archives/resumes/web/recommendations-collection/
Consider me if you are looking for someone that has repeatedly brought innovators visions to fruition. Someone with hands-on experience at all technical levels including: R&D, facilities acquisition & development, hardware, software development, systems administration, database, e-commerce, supply chain, manufacturing, networking, security, project management, vendors, services providers, publishing, on-shore and off-shore services, talent recruiting, staff management, and much more.

]]>SUMMARY
Multidisciplinary background in technologies and healthcare. Fluidly able to alternate between hands-on, team building, mentoring, and C-level positions (CTO, CIO, CDO, CSO, etc.) constantly updating data, information, knowledge, wisdom, methodologies, perspectives, and skills. As much as possible, as appropriate, sharing this experience and information openly to help expand the impact from these efforts to improve the overall human condition through outlets such as the non-profit RPG Research, the Tech Talk with Hawke broadcasts and website, other talk shows and podcasts, as well as many other channels and open source communities. Enabling organizations to swiftly take their vision and adapt requirement needs towards achieving an exceptional track record of success. Additional background as Washington State Department of Health Registered Recreational Therapist with a diverse background in education, neurosciences, neurotech, research, and healthcare (including nursing, rehabilitation, emergency room, in-patient and out-patient long-term care, medical records systems, HIPAA compliance, etc.) expands technical knowledge across many verticals.
A highly flexible technical leader, quality of life advocate, and professional development mentor with 15+ years of leadership and 20+ years hands-on technical engineering experience at all tiers: legacy and cloud infrastructure, data layers, middleware, front-end, advanced networking, hardware, physical and information security, etc. Working at all levels from hands-on through C-level management. Working with a range of companies from brand-new built-from-the-ground-up fast-growth startups, non-profits, small mom-and-pop shops, through SMBs, to global enterprises with 10k+ employees and millions of users, and Fortune 10, 50, 100, 500, and 1000 companies. Building departments and organization up from scratch to over 35 direct reports and over 200 under my overall supervision.
Often brought in to solve the problems that others have been stuck trying to solve, helping companies that are trying to figure out how to improve their efficacy and efficiency in SMBs and Enterprises, or to help thought leaders trying to figure out how to turn their ideas into reality from the ground up.
A great supporter of open source, and try to avoid custom-coding solutions from scratch if there are already great tools available (especially open source options) that can get organizations 60%, 80% or even 90%+ of the way to what the need much more quickly than most custom-coded solutions can, and with whole communities to support many of the tools, reducing the maintenance burden of our core support and development staff, and letting the organizations focus on their “secret sauce” rather than all of the little things that are already addressed by others. If there are no viable off the shelf open source or affordable solutions that are close enough to customize, then I have lead teams to build entire robust, and very importantly scalable, platforms from scratch and through multiple full version iterations (1.x, 2.x, etc.).
Taking more of a leading by example and being a mentor (not tor-mentor) leadership approach, with strong accountability but without being a micromanager.
In addition to an extensive technology and management background, organizations benefit by drawing on many years of background in the neurosciences, cognitive neuropsychology, neurotechnology, recreational therapy, innovative R&D, research psychology, and known as the “Grandfather of Therapeutic Gaming” in healthcare, role-playing game, professional development, education, and therapy industries.
]]>Phew! Finally! iNSUPPLi 1.2.0 is out the door and live in the app stores, with 1.2.1 rapidly on its heels. Shortly after 1.2.2 starts in early September, I'll be starting the early R&D on the 2.0 Platform, while continuing 1.x releases.
I will no longer be on a daily 20-24 hours per day 7 days a week schedule (as I've been on for the past few months!), and hopefully back to a much more sustainable 12 hours/day work schedule with time to exercise, spend time with family, get motorcycle fixed before the riding season is gone (September/October is the best riding season up here), get back to my music composing and performance and album releases as Synthetic Zen, and other life balancing tasks.
I can try to get back to a more balanced (healthier) schedule between juggling ManufacturingPower/iNSUPPLi (CTO), RPG Research (Executive Director), RPG Therapeutics LLC (CEO), Dev 2 Dev Portal LLC (President) weekly operations, and resuming the far overdue book writing that was supposed to resume in May (and totally impacts the future of both RPG Research (RPGR) and RPG Therapeutics (RPGT), but only now can I finally slot time to do so.
I am now spending today through Saturday trying to catch up on the mostly businesses focused insane backlog of emails (thousands), voicemails (scores), social media direct messages (innumerable), Discord, RPGSN and other chat platforms that piled up over this past crunch cycle.
Then starting this coming Sunday, through the next number of (indeterminate) weeks, I am blocking out Noon to 6:00 pm Sundays through Thursdays exclusively for finally finishing these books: https://www.rpgpublishers.com/publications
I will be completely switching off my phones, and all other communication media during this writing window.
Many of these books have been progressing over many years/decades, and some are several years overdue (each ranging between 40% to 90% complete):
* 2 core informational books (collected works of W.A. Hawkes-Robinson and RPG Research)
* 2 Third Edition training books (Study Guide and Workbook),
* 1 Handbook of practice,
* 2 instructional game books.
Once the training books are finalized, I have to update the online Learning Management System (LMS) at https://rpg.education so we can have everyone resume their online courses.
I then also have to get all the presentations updated to be in sync with the new book editions of the new third edition certification standards for the Certified Role-playing Game Professional (CRPGP) certification training, workshops, and exams. I am also changing the diplomas and certifications to a more "trades" / "blue collar" appenticeship, journeyman, master/professional model.
Meanwhile I am booked solid with MFGP/iNSUPPLi, RPGR, RPGT, and Dev2Dev, M-F mornings from 6 am to Noon. This means it will still be another month or two at least before I am really able to keep up with communication outside of these core necessities, take on exploratory vendor meetings, etc.
Phew!
]]>I am still catching up on a several months backlog of messages, emails, voicemails, SMS, etc.
Though work my hours are starting to come down to something more reasonable than the 120+ per week since late January, I still have a huge backlog of messages that will take me many days to catch up.
My apologies for the long delay. If you are trying to get a whole of me right now, please be patient.
It will probably be several more weeks before I even consider trying to login and go through any social media backlog. I very much enjoyed not dealing with social media, so I am debating whether I will even get back on there, we'll see.
I hope to be caught up in the next week or so and will get back to you as soon as I am able.

Specifically hired due to my extensive background with relevant enterprise and global-scale high capacity implementation of opensource and commercial technologies in video-conferencing, media streaming, education, online learning, community building, distributed synchronous and asynchronous communications and learning.
The previous project was also very sparse in planning and documentation. The revised project was much more extensively designed, tested, and documented, making sustainability much more manageable for future teams.
Some technologies and proprietary information are currently under NDA. The technologies listed here are the open source products introduced to avoid having to “reinvent the wheel” and focus instead of the specific areas distinctive to LearningMate’s solutions. Also worked on overhauling existing dysfunctional project design, management, development, staging, testing, and production roll-out methodologies.

is to determine the causal characteristics of role playing games, rather
than relying on correlative data as other studies have done in the past.
RPG Research Project beginning in 2003 and continuing.
Role Playing Gamer since 1979.

"Holistic medicine treats the person rather than the disease,
it's concern lies with the 'whole person' and with permitting
individuals to assume self-responsibility for their own health.
Whereas illness is the sole concern of 'traditional medicine',
holistic 'well medicine' deals with wellness and health promotion"

RPG Therapeutics using role-playing games as therapeutic intervention modalities using in-person and technology solutions.
RPG Research 501(c)3 non-profit charity providing a wide range of research and evidence-in-practice music and role-playing game programs across multiple modalities for a very wide range of populations from ages 2 years old through senior adults, and everyone in between, including many populations with special requirements.
